Wireless Mic Frequency Setup — Avoid Interference

English

Why Wireless Mic Frequency Setup Matters

A wireless microphone system is only as good as its frequency setup. Poor frequency configuration leads to interference, dropout, hiss, and buzzing — all of which are catastrophic during live events. In India's dense urban environments, the 2.4 GHz band is heavily congested with Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth speakers, and other wireless devices. For professional DJ and event use, UHF wireless microphone systems in the 470–870 MHz range provide significantly better range, clarity, and resistance to interference.

Understanding Wireless Mic Frequency Bands

VHF (Very High Frequency) — 170–216 MHz

Older technology, prone to interference from TV broadcasts and mobile signals. Not recommended for professional events in 2025. Generally found in budget microphone systems sold in the ₹800–₹2,000 range.

UHF (Ultra High Frequency) — 470–870 MHz

The professional standard. UHF systems offer multiple selectable frequencies, better range (up to 100 metres line-of-sight), and intermodulation-free channel selection. Punishka Trading stocks UHF wireless microphone systems in the 650–800 MHz range for events in Delhi NCR. Price range: ₹2,500–₹12,000 depending on brand and channel count.

2.4 GHz Digital

Digital wireless systems in the 2.4 GHz band offer excellent audio quality but are subject to congestion in urban environments. Suitable for controlled indoor settings but less reliable for outdoor events or venues with many guests carrying smartphones.

How to Scan and Set Frequencies

Step 1: Scan for Clear Frequencies

Most professional UHF wireless mic receivers have a built-in frequency scanner. Press the "Scan" button — the receiver will automatically identify the cleanest available frequency in your environment. Do this at the event venue (not at your studio) because interference profiles differ by location.

Step 2: Sync Transmitter to Receiver

After the receiver locks onto a clean frequency, use the IR sync function (available on most modern wireless mic systems) to synchronise the handheld or body-pack transmitter to the same frequency. Hold the transmitter's IR window close to the receiver's IR window and press the sync button.

Step 3: Check RF Signal Strength

Check the RF meter on the receiver's display. Signal should be consistently above -60 dBm (or equivalent bars) at operating distance. If signal drops at the limits of the performance area, consider adding a remote antenna or using an antenna splitter to position antennas closer to the performers.

Step 4: Set Audio Gain

Set the transmitter's audio gain (squelch) so the RF carrier is clean and there is no hiss when the mic is held at performance distance. Then set the receiver's output level to match your mixer's input sensitivity. Most mixers accept line or mic level — check your mixer's channel input switch.

Avoiding Interference at Events

Keep wireless receivers away from amplifiers, computers, and networking equipment. Use directional antennas pointed toward the stage. When using multiple wireless systems (e.g., 4-channel wireless mic setups), ensure each channel is on a different, intermodulation-free frequency — the manufacturer typically provides a frequency compatibility chart. Punishka Trading's 4-channel UHF wireless mic systems are pre-configured with compatible frequencies for easy multi-mic events.

Wireless Mic Frequency Setup

Frequency Bands

VHF (170–216 MHz)

UHF (470–870 MHz)

Professional Standard। 100 Meter तक Range, Multiple Selectable Frequencies, Intermodulation-Free Channel Selection।

Frequency कैसे Set करें — Step by Step

Interference
