Subwoofer vs Pressure Mid — What's the Difference?
Two terms that confuse many DJs and sound equipment buyers in India are subwoofer and pressure mid. Both are large speaker cabinets, often look similar, but serve very different purposes in a professional DJ sound system. This guide clears the confusion.
What Is a Subwoofer?
A subwoofer is a speaker designed specifically to reproduce very low frequencies — typically 20Hz to 150Hz. This is the range of deep bass: kick drums, bass guitar, 808 bass in EDM and Bollywood remixes. Subwoofers deliver the physical sensation of bass — the "thump" you feel in your chest at concerts and events.
Subwoofer cabinets typically house a single 18-inch woofer (or sometimes dual 15-inch or dual 18-inch) in a large ported enclosure. They work alongside a crossover to ensure only bass frequencies reach the subwoofer driver.
What Is a Pressure Mid?
A pressure mid (also called a pressure cabinet or punch mid) is a speaker that handles mid-bass frequencies — roughly 80Hz to 500Hz. This is the range of bass guitar punch, vocal body, snare drum impact, and the "warmth" of music. Pressure mids are often large cabinets that look similar to subwoofers but are tuned for a higher frequency range.
In a full professional DJ system, pressure mids are placed between the deep subwoofer and the mid-top PA speaker, filling the frequency gap to create a seamless, full-range sound.
Key Differences at a Glance
- Subwoofer frequency: 20–150Hz | Pressure mid frequency: 80–500Hz
- Subwoofer: Deep bass, felt physically | Pressure mid: Punchy bass, heard clearly
- Subwoofer driver: Typically 18" | Pressure mid driver: Typically 15" or 18" tuned differently
- Crossover point: Sub crosses over at ~80–150Hz | Pressure mid at ~300–500Hz
Do You Need Both?
For small to medium events (under 300 people), a subwoofer alone combined with full-range mid-top PA speakers is sufficient. For large events — outdoor concerts, big wedding grounds in Delhi — a 3-way system with subwoofer + pressure mid + high PA delivers the most powerful, balanced sound that carries far without muddiness.
Combination Recommendation for Indian DJs
- Small events: 2× 18" sub + 2× 15" mid-top PA
- Medium events: 4× 18" sub + 2× 15" mid-top PA
- Large events: 4× 18" sub + 2× pressure mid + line array tops + PU8000 amplifiers

Subwoofer vs Pressure Mid —
Subwoofer
Pressure Mid
Pressure mid 80Hz–500Hz range handle करता है — bass guitar punch, vocal body, snare impact, music की "warmth"।
- Subwoofer typically 18" driver | Pressure mid 15" या 18" (differently tuned)
- Large events: Sub + Pressure Mid + Line Array = most powerful combination
