Speakon Connector — Complete Guide for DJ Sound Systems
If you're still connecting your amplifier to your speakers using bare wire or banana plugs, it's time to upgrade. The Speakon connector is the professional standard for speaker connections in PA and DJ systems worldwide — and for good reason. This guide explains everything you need to know.
What Is a Speakon Connector?
Speakon is a locking speaker connector invented by Neutrik (Switzerland) in the 1980s specifically for professional audio. Unlike banana plugs or bare wire connections, Speakon connectors:
- Lock into the socket — cannot be accidentally pulled out during a live event
- Fully shrouded contacts — no exposed metal when connected or disconnected, preventing shorts
- Rated for high current — handles up to 40A continuous, suitable for even 8000W amplifiers like the PU8000
- Polarised — impossible to connect wrong polarity
NL2 vs NL4 Speakon Connectors
NL2 (2-pole)
The most common Speakon connector for DJ and PA use. Has two contacts (+ and −) for a standard single-speaker connection. One amplifier channel → one speaker. This is what you'll find on most DJ PA speakers and subwoofers in India.
NL4 (4-pole)
Has four contacts, allowing two independent speaker circuits through one cable. Used for bi-amping (running separate amplifier channels to the woofer and tweeter of the same cabinet) or for daisy-chaining multiple cabinets efficiently. Common in professional touring and rental systems.
Why Speakon Over Banana Plugs?
- Safety: No exposed live contacts. Banana plugs can arc and spark — extremely dangerous with high-power amplifiers
- Reliability: Locking mechanism prevents disconnection during performance
- Durability: Speakon connectors handle hundreds of connect/disconnect cycles; banana plugs loosen quickly
- Professional appearance: Every serious event company in Delhi NCR uses Speakon
How to Wire a Speakon Connector
Standard wiring for NL2:
- Pin 1+ → Red wire (positive)
- Pin 1− → Black wire (negative)
Use a 2.5mm² or 4mm² speaker cable for high-power connections (above 1000W). For longer cable runs (over 10 metres), use 4mm² to minimise resistance losses.

Speakon Connector — DJ
- Locking mechanism: Live event में accidentally pull out नहीं होता
- No exposed contacts: Short circuit का कोई risk नहीं
- Polarised: Wrong polarity connection impossible
NL2 vs NL4
NL2 (2-pole): Most common — single speaker connection।
NL4 (4-pole): Two independent circuits — bi-amping या daisy-chain के लिए।
Wiring — NL2
- Pin 1+ → Red wire (positive)
- Pin 1− → Black wire (negative)
