A crossover network plate is the small metal plate on the back of your speaker cabinet that splits the audio signal between the low-frequency (LF) woofer and high-frequency (HF) driver. Wiring it wrong is the #1 cause of blown tweeters at Indian weddings. This step-by-step guide walks you through doing it right.
What a Network Plate Actually Does
It contains a passive crossover circuit (capacitors, inductors, sometimes resistors) that routes bass frequencies to the woofer and highs to the tweeter. It also provides Speakon/binding post terminals so you can connect the amplifier cleanly. Without it, your amp's full-range signal would send bass to the tweeter and burn it out in seconds.
Step 1 — Identify the Terminals
Most network plates have: 1 input (Speakon NL4 or binding posts), LF+/LF- output to woofer, HF+/HF- output to tweeter, and sometimes an attenuator (pad) switch for tweeter level. Open the plate and take a clear photo before you disconnect anything.
Step 2 — Prepare Your Cables
Use 14–16 AWG speaker cable for LF connections (bass pulls more current), and 18 AWG for HF. Strip 8–10 mm of insulation, twist strands tight, and tin the ends with solder if possible. Loose strands in a binding post cause intermittent buzz that's very hard to diagnose later.
Step 3 — Connect the Woofer
Red (+) from LF+ terminal to the positive spade/tab on the woofer. Black (−) from LF- to negative tab. Double-check polarity — phase reversal on a single driver in a stereo pair makes the whole mix sound hollow.
Step 4 — Connect the Tweeter
Same rule: + to +, − to −. Most HF drivers have much smaller terminals — don't over-tighten or you'll strip the threads. Use spade connectors (not bare wire) for reliable contact.
Step 5 — Connect the Amplifier Input
If using Speakon NL4, pin 1+ and 1− carry the signal from your power amplifier. Lock the Speakon by twisting clockwise until it clicks. For binding posts, red on +, black on −, then tighten fully.
Step 6 — Test Before Sealing the Cabinet
Power up your amp at low volume (25%), play a pink-noise or full-range track, and listen for: (a) bass from woofer only, (b) highs from tweeter only, (c) no buzz or scratch. If you hear bass from the tweeter, the crossover is miswired or bypassed — stop immediately.
Common Wiring Mistakes
- Polarity reversed: Makes stereo mix sound thin and hollow.
- LF and HF swapped: Blows the tweeter in under 10 seconds.
- Bare wire touching chassis: Shorts the amp — burns output stage.
- Wrong gauge cable: Overheats on LF runs longer than 5 m.
Active vs Passive Crossover
Passive network plates are inside the cabinet. Active crossovers sit outside the cabinet (often in your DJ mixer or as a standalone unit) and split the signal before amplification — giving each driver its own dedicated amp channel. For high-end setups, active is cleaner. For most Indian DJs, passive with a good network plate is perfect.
When to Replace a Network Plate
If you hear crackling only at high volume, if the tweeter cuts out intermittently, or if there's burning smell after long runs — one of the crossover components has degraded. Call Punishka Trading, Rohini, New Delhi for genuine replacement plates.

Crossover Network Plate कैसे Connect करें — Step by Step
Step 1 — Terminals
Step 2 — Cable
Step 3 — Woofer Connect
Step 4 — Tweeter Connect करें
Same rule: + to +, − to −।
Step 5 — Amplifier Input
Amp को 25% volume पर चलाएं, pink-noise track play करें, और सुनें: (a) bass सिर्फ woofer से, (b) highs सिर्फ tweeter से, (c) कोई buzz नहीं।
- Polarity reverse — stereo sound hollow
