Types of DJ Bass Cabinets
- Bass Reflex (Ported): The most common design in India. Easy to build, punchy mid-bass, good for weddings and birthdays.
- Folded Horn: Louder per watt, deeper bass, travels far outdoors. Bigger and heavier — preferred by high-end concert operators.
- Bandpass: Extremely loud in a narrow band. Mostly for party speakers, not recommended for music quality.
- Sealed: Tightest and most accurate bass. Used in studios, rare in Indian DJ setups.
Driver Size — 15, 18 or 21 Inch?
15-inch drivers deliver quick, musical kick-drum punch — good for birthday and cocktail setups. 18-inch is the Indian standard for sangeet and wedding DJ — deep, thumping bass that carries through 500 guests. 21-inch drivers go even lower and are used in concert rigs and outdoor events of 1,000+ people. Most weddings in Delhi NCR go with double 18-inch bass cabinets.
Cabinet Size and Tuning
A good 18-inch bass reflex cabinet has an internal volume of 180–220 litres, tuned to 35–45 Hz. Smaller cabinets sound "tight" but lose depth. Larger cabinets sound "boomy" but reach lower. Cabinet Material
Use 18mm or 21mm birch plywood for the body, internal bracing every 25 cm, proper damping with acoustic foam and polyurethane sealing on joints. Cheap MDF cabinets crack within one monsoon in India. Always insist on plywood for touring use.
Matching Amplifier and Crossover
An 18-inch 800W RMS bass cabinet wants a 1,200W amp channel bridged or in parallel — the PU8000 handles two such cabs per side beautifully. Use a KMC8 or equivalent DSP with a low-pass at 120 Hz, high-pass at 35 Hz, and subsonic filter below 30 Hz to protect the driver.
